My story is not one of overnight success. I didn’t take a magic pill. My results were not from a fad diet or a product from an infomercial.
Mine was the definitive story of the girl who had been heavy her entire life. Growing up, I was this cheerful, jovial, overweight friend that everyone loved! Being a successful marketing professional in the fashion retail corporate sector took up the majority of my adult time. Eating healthy or exercising was never a priority. And the fact that I come from a big Punjabi family which loves to eat, only made matters worse! Traditional Indian foods were a large part of our custom and lifestyle.
As I got older, the weight piled on. Constantly dealing with my body issues, I started feeling uncomfortable in my own skin. I was overweight and looked several years more than my actual age. I had started showing early signs of health issues like PCOS. The occasional verbal and social bullying I were being subjected to all my life now made me cringe.
The unending comparisons with others and the surreptitious body-shaming regime had deep impact on my self-esteem. My inner happiness completely eluded me. I started feeling depressed; anxiety slithered-in and I experienced a sudden nervous breakdown.
My loving family were a constant source of support and encouragement at this time. I took a break from the unending spiral of my negativity and swore to take a serious perspective of my life. Eventually, I realised that I had been ignoring not just my physical health & fitness, but several other vital aspects such as my mental, emotional and social wellbeing. In summation, my body was simply a reflection of my unbalanced lifestyle.
I had failed at balancing my life earlier but this time, I was determined to make myself happy. Ignoring the noises in my head, I commenced my “change for good”, for I had finally found “The best project to ever work on: MYSELF”.
This was my point of no return. And it all started with exploration and research. I studied & certified myself learning the science of weight loss, the recommended macros intake, weight training and whole the psychology of obesity & weight gain. With a bruised ego and a strong will power, I set achievable goals for myself. I took my progress pictures and carefully tracked my weight and inches loss.
I made a realistic plan, followed it consistantly and was able to drop my body fat percentage from 39% to 24%:
Now, I am now in the best shape of my life, with a positive mindset and keenly focused on overall well-being. I am in love with myself, my body shape and all flaws included. I am kinder and more patient with my body. I don’t acknowledge the social standards and definitions of beauty and I am focused on improving myself each day.
I have realised that fitness is not a result of what is done for a few days. It’s the culmination of what is done every day as a lifestyle both physically & mentally. The ground work for true happiness is “health”. So, work out, eat well, be patient, stay happy & your body will reward you.
